FIRST LIGHT AWARDS FILM ONLINE
Filmmakers from Chocolate Films projects were nominated for two awards at the 2010 First Light Awards, and took home "Best Film By 12 and Under". A short film about the ceremony is now online featuring our two crews alongside such luminaries as Sir Ian McKellan, Gemma Arterton and Nicholas Hoult. And guess who gets the last word!

16 FILMS BY LAMBETH PRIMARY SCHOOL TO BE SCREENED AT BFI SOUTHBANK
Over three months, filmmakers from Chocolate Films have worked with every yeargroup at Archbishop Sumner Primary school in Lambeth on a project called "Sumner's Stories". Children aged between 4 and 11 have written shot animated and edited films on subjects as diverse as "The Great Fire Of London", "The History Of Ancient Egypt", "Indian Gods" and they have even solved the perennial problem, " Where Is Spot?". NEW EXHIBITION AT HEATHROW TERMINAL 5
Now that flights are back up and running, if you happen to go to Heathrow Terminal 5, check out the Take Me To London exhibition. You will be able to see 17 films that young people from youth groups, community groups and schools in the outer London boroughs made on trips to Olympic sites, as well as photos and writings that they created along the way. The Take Me To London '09 exhibition was first seen at Waterman in January and February and will be at Heathrow until later this year. Take Me To London is a three year project that Chocolate Films is running with Watermans. CONGRATLUATIONS TO THE MAKERS OF "SECRETS FROM THE SAZ"
Secrets From The Saz, the short film made by children from the Kurdish Community Centre,
won "Best Film by children aged 12 and under" at the prestigious First Light Awards. The event was hosted by Dick and Dom and the awards were presented by stars such as Ian McKellan and Jason Isaacs. The young filmmakers were also on BBC London TV news. Well done to them all. They put a great deal of hard work in over lots of Sundays and created a fantastic film.

LIVE FROM THE STEPHEN LAWRENCE CENTRE - FIRST LIVE BROADCAST
For the last five weeks, filmmakers from Chocolate Films have been working with a group of

THE SECRET, screening at BFI

The Secret, a short drama that looks at the issue homophobic bullying in schools is being screened as par of the "Visionaries" festival at the BFI Southbank on Saturday November 28th. The film was made in fortnightly workshops over a period of 9months by a dedicated group of young filmmakers from the BAD (Barking and Dagenham) Youth Forum's Equalities subcommittee. BIFFYBOT 2.0, screening as part of Electric December

Biffybot 2.0, an imaginative music video made by children on during a summer project run by Chocolate FIlms at the BFI Southbank is being screened as part of Electric December:

"Electric December, Watershed’s original end of year online showcase of creative talent, is led this year by a team of young people from Bristol (UK) and Vilnius (Lithuania) as part of the Young Voices Across Europe project, which is funded with the support of the European Commission though the Youth In Action programme and produced within the wider context of the European Year of Creativity and Innovation.
Talented young filmmakers from across Europe have contributed a stunning selection of short films, 24 of which have been hand-picked by the Electric December team in a unique online collaboration."

NEW COURSE: Make Your Own Music Video (24-27 August)

Next Generation – Filmmaking Workshop: FREE
The next generation of filmmakers is what Canary Wharf Film Festival, with support from the Canary Wharf Group, likes to help cultivate, so part of the festival’s plan is to give them a helping hand to set them on their way.So, alongside Chocolate Films we will also be running a workshop throughout the summer, specifically for East London students (15-19) interested in learning about the filmmaking process. Over three days you will create a fictional film using Canary Wharf as your location. Storyboarding, filming and editing skills will all be within their reach and the film they create will be shown as part of CWFF 09’s Next Generation Film screening. There’s also a Special Achievement prize, awarded at this year’s Awards Show.

OUR MOVING HISTORIES: SUTTON SCREENING

'Our Moving Histories' Chocolate Films' new filmmaking project which incorporates footage from London's local archives, has its first screening at the Sutton Empire cinema on Wednesday 24 June '09 at 6pm.
The two films which will be screened are "Pastimes and Past Times" and "Obsession with Fashion", both of which were made by girls from Wallington Girls School.

ID:LONDON HITS THE BIG SCREEN!
Young filmmakers from all over London have been busy over the past few months working hard on the Chocolate Films ID:London youth filmmaking project. Now its time to celebrate their achievements with the four ID:London films hitting cinema screens across the capital in April and May.

CHOCOLATE FILMS ON NATIONAL THEATRE FLYTOWER DURING THAMES FESTIVAL!

Over the summer Chocolate Films ran several filmmaking projects as part of the Thames Festival. These were screened at the BFI Southbank on Sunday 14th September and projected onto the flytower of the National Theatre on the evening of Saturday 13th September. Congratulations to all of the partcipants from The Croxley Project, The Westminster Digital Media Unit, The Leonora Club and Shared Experience Youth Theatre.

THE FIRST CHOCOLATE FILMS REALITY SHOW PROJECT!

Chocolate Films Education has just completed its first reality show-style project. In"Age Swap" a group of students from Sydney Russell School in Dagenham teach a group of elderly people how to create a graffiti wall and in return, the senior citizens teach the children how to tea-dance. The programme was shot over 7 days by

After a busy few months, three new films have just gone online:

The Miracle Potion, a live action/animated film by 15 children at Acton High School.

The Mysterious Girl - a film made by 9 and 10 year olds at St Mary's RC Primary School in Acton using CGI animation

Monsters of Battersea Park - a short monster movie created by 60 children aged between 4 and 14 in a series of 45 minute workshops in Battersea Park.

Freedom Ain't Free will reach an international audience this April, as it has been selected to play in the Doc It! youth programme of the prestigious Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival (April 17-27). ANIMATION WORKSHOP ANNOUNCED

On 1st March we will be running a practical 2hour long 3D animation workshop for children aged between 8 and 13 years. It will take place from 1 to 3pm at the Images of Black Women Film Festival at Kilburn's Tricycle Theatre. Children will get the chance to make an animated rock concert using Stikfas models! VOTE FOR THE BANANA BOMB!!!

Congratulations to the group from St Mary's RC Primary School in Battersea. Not only was their film, "The Singing Banana Bomb" screened at the London Children's Film Festival but it has now been nominated for a First Light Award!!!

What's more, The Best Film by 12s & Under category is this year’s people’s choice award. Therefore all three short listed films are being streamed in the online Cinema of www.filmstreet.co.uk. There is a link from the home page Film Mag section to an article about the public vote, which in turn links to all three films.

CHOCOLATE ON THE BOX!!!
Blue Peter is running a reality show-style feature where 12 children get a chance to make a professional film. From today, Chocolate Films directors Mark Currie and Rachel Wang are the on-screen filmmaking trainers throughout. In the first episode see how the children are chosen when 120 competition winners attend Chocolate Films workshops around the UK and how celebrity film guru Duncan Kenworthy (producer of Notting Hill and Love Actually) assigns the teams to Mark and Rachel.

The Blue Peter feature is part of a larger scheme called ‘Me and My Movie’ for which Chocolate Films has run the filmmaking training and written the resources. So watch this space!

CHOCOLATE FILMS TO RUN BBC MYMOVIES WORKSHOPS

Children under 14 can now click onto the CBBC website to find out how to enter Blue Peter's biggest ever competition. The 120 lucky winners will spend a day with Chocolate Films making a short film. 12 children will then be chosen to spend 2 weeks at the My Movie mansion, working with some of the biggest names in the industry. Throughout 2006 Chocolate Films ran a two day workshop to accompany each exhibition at Battersea's Pump House Gallery. Each of these films was directly influenced by the artwork, and the results are as varied and original as the works themselves.

The Pump House Film Studio was funded by Paul Hamlyn, The Sir Walter St John Charitable Trust and Arts About Wandsworth.

21 April 11am - BrainChild Screening
Funded by First Light Movies, Chocolate Films is running a series of three long-term workshops with young people from South London. The resulting films will be screened at this premiere screening with special guests.

BrainChild was supported by First Light Movies, Acton High School, The BFI, The ICA, The Hayward Gallery and The Science Museum.

FIRST BRAINCHILD PROJECT WRAPS
First Light has recently funded Chocolate Films to produce three films made by young people. Under the collective name of "Brain Child" they will each approach an aspect of psychology in a surprising way.
The first of these projects, the documentary FREEDOM AIN'T FREE was shot over the half term week by a group of fifteen young people aged between 16 and 18. The film approaches young people's experiences of injustice in a dynamic and creative documentary style. ANIMATIONS TO BE SCREENED AT DANCE PERFORMANCE

RMX-1 screened at cinema

RMX-1 a new short documentary created by young people at the Rich Mix cultural centre in Bethnal Green is now complete. Created in a course that ran one day per week for two months, it tells the story of Leepu, a Bangladeshi artist, who creates supercars from scrap. It is being screened at the Rich Mix Cinema before the new Disney/Pixar film Cars from July 28. For more information visit www.richmix.org.uk

THE HISTORY OF OUR SCHOOL

The History Of Our School, a short film that tells the history of the North Westminster Community School is being screened at the Serpentine Gallery Exhibition, Dis-assembly, which runs at the school until July 29. It was created with two Year 8 classes over a period of five weeks in the summer term.

CHOCO STARS AT FIRST LIGHT AWARDS

The young creators and stars of "Nabbed" had a great morning at the First Light Film Awards at the Odeon Leicester Square. Although they missed out on a trophy, their film received high praise from some extremely important filmmakers.

Neil Jordan, director The Company Of Wolves, Breakfast on Pluto said: “ The photography and writing were both very good.  Thought the casting was natural as well.”
   
Gurinder Chadha, director of "Bend It Like Beckham" and "Bride and Prejudice said: “This film was very good.  A hard choice.”

"NABBED" NOMINATED FOR AWARD

Congratulations to the young people from the Columbian Refugee Association who wrote the short film "Nabbed" (one of the Visions Of London projects). We have just found out that it has been nominated for the "Best Screenplay award at the prestigious First Light Awards later this month!

PUMP HOUSE FILM STUDIO LAUNCHES

Chocolate Films and the Pump House Gallery are collaborating throughout 2006 on "The Pump House Film Studio" - a series of six short films made by young people from schools and community groups in the London borough of Wandsworth. Each film will be created alongside one of the Pump Houses six exhibitions, starting with the current Gastrophoria exhibition. The Pump House film studio is funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and the Sir Walter St John Educational Trust.

The screening of "Too Intelligent for Words" and "Mystic Bottle" at the Co-op Short Film Festival in Bradford was a great success and was attended by two of the filmmakers who received the certificates on behalf of all the participants.

MYSTIC BOTTLE AT THE WANDSWORTH ARTS FESTIVAL

"Mystic Bottle" was screened as part of the Community Film Screening at the Battersea Arts Centre on Saturday November 5th at 3.00pm. The event was hosted by Rachel Wang.

SPACE: THE FINAL FRONTIER

Chocolate Films will be leading exciting short film workshops that will include stop-frame animation and green screen technology.

BIFF! BANG! POW! to Brixton Bytes

Three short films created by participants of Chocolate Films educational workshops are being screened at the NFT on April 16th, starting from 11.30am.

The Hayward Gallery are previewing their DVD of short films, which includes Me Two, The Assasination of Moonwalker and the award-winning Silence is Golden. Entrance is free, but get there early as space is limited.

LONDON/AFRICA PROJECT COMPLETED

'The Assassination of Moonwalker' is a short film created by young participants of the London/Africa project (part of the Visions of London studio slate funded by First Light; UK Film Council). The Chocolate Films/Hayward Gallery collaboration is being shown at the Royal Festival Hall as part of 'Salon Afrique'. The film will run on a loop from March 7th until April 10th. SILENCE IS GOLDEN wins Sci-Fi London competition!!!

Congratulations to everyone involved in SILENCE IS GOLDEN, the Chocolate Films/Hayward Gallery dystopian Sci-Fi movie set in and around London's South Bank. This morning the film won first prize in the Sci-Fi London What If...? film competition. The filmmakers were presented with prizes (including a full Adobe Video Suite) by Louis Savy, festival director. SILENCE IS GOLDEN will soon be screened on the Sci-Fi Channel website.

SILENCE IS GOLDEN - finalist in Sci-Fi London competition

The Chocolate films production SILENCE IS GOLDEN, a young people's film commissioned by See Through at The Hayward Gallery in late 2004, is being screened as a finalist in the What If...? film competition, part of the Sci-Fi London Film Festival on Saturday 5th Feb 2005 at the Curzon SOHO Cinema (99 Shaftesbury Avenue, London W1D 5DY).

The prize-giving ceremony and event round-up will take place from 10.15am prompt. This event is free but you do need to call the box office on 020 7734 2255 and order tickets.

VISIONS OF LONDON - four new films for 2005

Chocolate films is running four new film projects for young people in Spring 2005. Funded by the lottery through the UK Film Council's first Light Scheme, the films will explore diverse visions of the city.

The projects are as follows:

A LONDON ANTHEM
A 10 minute real-time drama made by and starring teenagers from Waterloo, Lambeth and Wandsworth. Made in association with The Old Vic Theatre and funded in part by the Sir Walter St John's Trust.

LONDON/AFRICA
A film inspired by the Africa Remix exhibition of contemporary art at The Hayward Gallery.

BATTERSEA PARK
A short animation inspired by the exhibition of abstract animations by video artist Katy Dove at the Battersea Pumphouse gallery, created by students from Chestnut Grove School Tooting.

WRITING WITH PICTURES
A short visual documentary made by students from The Dyslexia Institute, Victoria.

ME TWO wins prize

Me Two, the short film that Chocolate Films made with young filmmakers at The Hayward Gallery this summer, won third prize in The Black History Month Film Festival.

NEW PROJECT: PHANTASMAGORIA SESSIONS AT HAYWARD

Chocolate Films is currently running the "Phantasmagoria Sessions" at The Hayward Gallery in conjunction with the "Eyes Lies and Illusions" exhibition. Over five Saturdays in November and December, we will work with young filmmakers aged between 16 and 25 to make a five minute sci-fi film on the South Bank. Face Time - in conjunction with Hayward Gallery

In late July/ early August 2004, Chocolate Films will be producing "Face Time" a short visual documentary about image and self-image inspired by The About Face exhibition at London's Hayward Gallery.

The film will be made by teenage filmmakers from Lambeth and Southwark, who will be trained in filmmaking, post-production and digital manipulation skills throughout the project. If you are between 14 and 18 and would like to be involved in Face Time please email Mark Currie at info@chocolatefilms.com to sign up.

Face Time is funded by the lottery through the UK Film Council's First Light scheme.

CHECK-UP screening information

The first screening of the Chocolate Films production "Check-Up", a short film made by patients of the teen cancer wards at UCLH and Middlesex Hospitals, will be taking place next week:

Date: 23 February 2004
Time: 6pm (don't be late as the film only lasts 5 minutes!)
Location: Preview Theatre, Framestore CFC building, 19-23 Wells Street (about 100 yds north of Oxford Street)

Chocolate Films receives funding for 'Punchline' project

Chocolate Films has been awarded one of five Film Council First Light grants for the London region to make 'Punchline'. The 5 minute short will be written, developed, shot, performed and edited by patients in the teenage cancer wards of the Middlesex and UCL hospitals under the supervision of Mark Currie and Rachel Wang in London in January 2004. Masala Screening at NFT

Masala, the Chocolate Films Bollywood short, will be screened at the National Film Theatre 1 on September 20 at 11am. No tickets necessary, just turn up early!

'Masala' introductory workshop

The Chocolate Films summer community project for young people in Lambeth goes live on Saturday August 2nd when the introductory workshop will be held at:

ADDRESS: St Vincents Community Centre
(corner of Talma Road and Pobert St, Brixton, SW2 1AJ)

TIME: 10 am - 5 pm

The aim of the project is for young people between the ages of 12 and 18 to make a Bollywood-style short film from scratch, culminating in a screening at the National Film Theatre in September 2003.

The project is free for Lambeth residents
